American schools within the past decade have been changing the way that they teach students. To Learn or To Teach brings up the question of: Are we teaching students so that they learn or are we just teaching them to fill them with information and moving on? Any student can listen to information, the real question is can they take what they are recieving and continue with it outside of the classroom.
What we believed before......
School systems before this last decade have been teaching just to teach. They focused only on making sure that students were ready to test and that they passed. Teachers no longer were teaching to make sure that students understood the material. Teachers would cover the topic and than move on to the next topic, even if students did not get the material that was being covered
What we believed after......
WIthin the last decade changes are being made so that every student, no matter how they learn or at what speed, has a chance to learn a subject. More and more teachers are also striving to get students interested in the topic that they are teaching. More work is being done so that students take what they have learned and apply it outside of the classroom. There is more hands on activities to get kids involved and working together on the same page as a group.
How do schools still act as if we have the "old" belief?
Some school systems feel that as long as your teaching and the students are testing fine, everything is ok. What they are not focusing on is what the student is learning, facts or "real" information. Can the student apply things that they are learning outside of class and are they interested? Somtimes in today's world schools ignore these questions and just look to teach for testing purposes.
